CENTER for BALANCE and TRANSFORMATION
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a level on concentration that any average person goes through on a daily basis. We experience this state on a regular basis and are probably very unaware that we are in the experience, as we go through it almost automatically. If you have been doing a very mundane task and have gotten halfway through it, and found that you kind of lost track of time, and found that we were nearly done with the task, you were in that kind of state. You may have experienced that state while driving, and don’t remember having passed through certain areas as you arrive at your destination.
Hypnotherapy on the other hand is a guided relaxation/concentration effort that includes a therapist and generally uses the method for creating life change. The therapist gives suggestions that create new awareness. That particular awareness enhances the person’s own efforts and helps to create the changes they want to enhance in their lives. Most individuals go through hypnosis because of personal motivation to change.
One of the myths of hypnosis is that you are under someone’s control. That is a far cry from reality. If a person is given a suggestion in a hypnotic state, they will still not do anything that does not fit into their normal moral and ethical values. Stage hypnosis makes it look different, but often, for this kind of exhibition, people are in the mood to loose their inhibitions and act silly and have a good time.
Being in a hypnotic state does not erase awareness. People are in a hyper-state of awareness, which is quite relaxing. This state allows awareness of the environment, as well as what is happening internally in the inner mind. It has been suggested by many authors in the field, that hypnosis is a state that is between sleep and being awake. People most often feel so relaxed that they may feel that they have had a good rest. However it is, hypnosis is a unique restful state that enhances our ability to accept new ideas for change in our lives.
Our motivation to make a change in our lives is one of the biggest contributing factors in having this method work for us. It will be difficult to make the change if you are half hearted about making a change. After all, our personal motivation for change is generally what propels us towards doing any life exploratory work.
